* Library Books, a Comic Strip, and a Tomato *

Because of my participation in yesterday's Top Ten Tuesdays, I just had to visit my local library today and check out one of Maeve Binchy's books that I haven't already read. I chose A Week in Winter, which she completed shortly before her death last year.

While I was in the same area, I also picked up Buddy, How a Rooster Made Me a Family Man, by Brian McGrory. I've heard a lot about it and I'm pretty sure I'll like it. It also has an average of 4 Stars on Amazon out of 157 reviews.

I also picked up The Time Keeper, by Mitch Albom. I'm expecting to really like this, since his other books are just magical to me.

For the first time in my life, I headed straight to the Large Print shelves and that's where I got these! I just can't read for any length of time (speaking of the time keeper...buh dum!) anymore, without my eyes getting so blurry, I can't see the words properly. And it happens shortly after I begin reading. SO, all three of these books are in Large Print. And I must say it's been a long time since I've seen any, and when they say Large, they mean LARGE! Especially Mitch Albom's book. It looks like Fun with Dick and Jane! Run Jane run. See Jane Run.

This was in today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch and it made me laugh! The strip is called Rhymes With Orange, by Hilary B. Price

And, what does a tomato have to do with this particular blog post? Nothing, really. Something funny happened to me this morning that I thought I'd share.

First I should provide a little back story. One of my newly met (3 months ago) friends here at the townhouses has a few HUGE tomato plants....and I do mean HUGE! They are way taller than I am! (and I don't want to hear any jokes about how that's not very tall!) I'll have to take a picture of them sometime. I wish I would've thought of it today. Anyway....She gave me a few freshly picked, ripe off the vine tomatoes and they are yummy!

One of the larger ones had been cut and the rest of it was in the refrigerator. I burnt the corner of my mouth this morning....after I made french toast...and I didn't want to stick an ice cube on my lips....because it would've gotten stuck to my lips! So, I grabbed that half of tomato and it was the perfect cold temperature! So, next time you have a small burn, don't grab for ice or butter or aloe....open that frig and grab a tomato!!

Wouldn't that look good under your title? Who knew there was yet another use for tomatoes?

    1. Hi Val! You're so right! But if I add the first aid tip thingy, should it be in LARGE letters?! :)

  3. I love Maeve Binchy. I think the only book I haven't read is her last one (and the short stories) and I do intend to read it whenever I can get it from the library.

    1. Hi Joyful! I've read her short stories and really liked them, too. There's a couple more of her books that I've somehow missed....the newer ones. So, I'll have to add them to the never ending pile of TBR! Thanks for stopping by!

    2. Your post prompted me to get Maeve Binchy's last book from the library. I was lucky not to have to wait for it as the library system here has 47 copies of the book and every one of them are checked out!

  4. Yay for home grown tomatoes. Yay for libraries. Booh and hiss for the shared need for large print. (Which I haven't succumbed to yet.) Booh and hiss for my stupidity.

    1. Hi EC! I agree with ya on all those counts! Although I HAVE succumbed. It's so much easier to read for longer periods of time.....like for more than 5 or 10 minutes!

  5. So glad to be here. We started to wear glasses for the first time ever and were horrified how dependant we became on them. So we have put them to one side (for emergency use only) and it has taken weeks for our eyes to get strong enough again to be able to read without squinting and leaning over. Maybe we should try large print. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

    1. Hi Molly! Wow! I'm impressed your eyes were able to "come back" to not needing your glasses. I've been wearing them since 5th grade and I really could NOT get along without them! Thanks again for stopping, commenting, and being my new follower! :)

  6. Ha! That comic. It took me a second…but omg, too funny! I have Time Keeper on my TBR shelf. Love Mitch Albom's wisdom and insight. It should be another good read.

  9. I laughed at myself as I enlarged my screen so I could see it. Maybe I need to start getting large print books too. Thanks for the tomato tip. You sound well. Take care.

    1. Hi Myrna! I'd wished the print was a bit darker, so it'd be easier to read, but knew y'all could enlarge it, too! I'm feeling great. I kind of took a detour from my healthy eating for a little while, but I'm back on track! The difference it makes is amazing! I hope you're doing wonderfully!

  10. Large print is my friend anymore too. I can read the regular print, but I enjoy it much more and can read for much longer with the large print. I hope you enjoy your books! :)

  11. Oh I love that comic strip. Too cute!
I never would have thought of using a tomato for a burn. Good to know! Hope your burn is fine now though.

    1. Hi Julie! Yes, very funny strip! I would never think to use a tomato either! It just happened to be there and it was SO cold....and with it being wrapped in plastic, it was perfect! Burn all gone!

  12. That comic strip is cute!

I can see a day in the near future where large print may appeal to me too. In the meantime, walmart keeps me stocked in pretty readers!

    1. Hi Julie! Thanks! I've tried some "readers" too and some have worked really well, but when I read in bed, sometimes they just get in the way!

  13. My hubby makes fun of me, but I like big large books, too. As much as I read, they're just easier on the ol' eyes. (Too bad the newspaper print isn't a little bigger, too.)

I agree with you about Mitch Albom. His books ARE magical.

    1. Hi Susan! Whatever makes our reading easier and better, I say "Do it!" And I agree about newspaper print! OMG! I think it's gotten smaller over the years...and faded!
So glad you also think Mitch's books are magical!

    1. Hi there! So glad to know you like Maeve's books, and you loved the cartoon! We have lots in common! :)
Also, I never thought about the cost of shipping a book depending on the font size. Thanks for the tip!

  18. Becky:
I thought Time Keeper was okay. I just don't feel like any of his books have been as good as Tuesdays with Morrie, but maybe that is unfair of me. I'm interested to know about your opinion no the Buddy book--I think I would like that.

Large print always makes me feel like I read so fast. . .:) LOL

    1. Hi Margo! Thanks for stopping. It's great to "see" you! The Time Keeper is slow reading for me. I'll have to give my critique of it when I finish. My favorite Mitch Albom book is For One More Day. I'll let you know about the Buddy book, too!
