* YAY! I GOT A NEW (USED) DESK! *

Not too long ago, I mentioned that my "desk" is really a very small, wooden kitchen table. It has plenty of room for all my paper messes, but no drawers, which I could really use.

Recently, I saw one at Hobby Lobby that I just fell in love with. It's really small, shabby chic with some light green in it, and had matching chair. It would look so cute in my bedroom/office, BUT, even on sale, the price is way too much. It didn't have any drawers, either.

I even called them today to ask if they still had one and if it was any cheaper than last week. J

Yep, they still had them, but the price was the same, too. That's when I decided to look again on Craigslist. It's fun, like going to resale shops or Goodwill. You never know what you might find! So...

Here's the desk I found. It had only been listed three hours earlier, was the size and "look" I wanted, the people lived only a few miles away......AND the price was right! It was the fastest transaction I've ever made. I called about it, The Ronald was in the area, he went to the house, paid for it and brought it home! Voila!

I'm going to take the knobs and drawer pulls off of it, paint it white, and shabby it up a bit! I'll probably go to Hobby Lobby to buy different knobs and pulls, too. It will go perfectly with a couple of other pieces I already have. I haven't been so excited about a purchase in a long time! It's solid wood, too, and very heavy.
And the price was $40.00!

I'll post pictures when I'm finished painting it....Wish me luck!

P.S. My post on February 25th, about the empty ink cartridge....I did take it back to Walmart, explained what happened, and they exchanged it for me! So, I was able to get new ink, AND keep my other items I was going to return, to make up for the "lost" money. Next time I buy ink at any store, I'll have the cashier open the box right there, to make sure it's a good one.

  1. Yay for having the ink cartridge replaced. The fact that they did, after you had opened it makes me wonder whether they had experienced that trick before.
And I love your desk. Yay for drawers. Lots of drawers. Fantastic price too.

    1. Hi EC! I think Walmart has seen just about every trick imaginable! Sad, but true of probably most stores, too. Glad you like my desk!! I hope I can really do a good job on it. I've never painted furniture before!

  2. That is a beautiful desk and I can't believe the price. That is practically giving it away. Me, being older would probably prefer it left in its original condition and touched up a little but I am sure it will also look great in white. New drawer handles etc. Do they really need to be changed? Sorry, I must mind my own business as nobody's tastes are the same.
My granddaughter has just done up a student desk that has a history. My mum gave the desk to my daughter in about 1966 and it was a varnished pale wood colour. My daughter eventually painted it and later passed it on to her daughter (my granddaughter). Christie has now stripped it and stained it and has put it in her 6 y-o's room. She says in her home it has been used as a desk, a hall table and now back to a desk. I doubt it cost my mum very much back in 1966 but it's wonderful to see it still in use,
I missed your post about your ink cartridge but some years ago I had bought a refill ribbon for my electric typewriter and when I opened it found it had reached its end. I took it back to BigW not thinking for a moment I would be believed but I was (I do have an honest face I think) and was told to collect a new ribbon. The lady at the enquiry desk told me that was mild compared with what some people do. I couldn't imagine going into a store, stealing a new ribbon and replacing it with a used one. I now realise why items are so difficult to open these days. The thieving has to be stopped somehow.

    1. Hi Mimsie! I just loved your comment! I'm pleased that you took such time to express your ideas about my desk, and also tell me about the one that's been in your family for so long. I love those kinds of stories! When I was in high school, I had one of those pale, varnished desks, and really didn't like it very much, but it was cheap and affordable! I have no idea what happened to it. I think after I left home, my mom sold lots of stuff when she moved. So happy you got your new typewriter ribbon, too. I never thought before why those darn plastic containers are so hard to open...and here you've just explained it to me!! Thank you! Darn thieves! I really love it when you stop by and leave comments! And don't worry, you can always express whatever opinion you have! Hugs to you, Mimsie!

  3. Good thing about the ink and the desk looks like a fun project. You must show when it is finished.
    Have a super Saturday.

  4. Glad you found a desk you like! That is a good price for a wood desk. Sometimes I wonder if the things being sold today are even real wood and not a composite. Can't wait to see the transformation.

    1. Hi Sheila! How great to see you here! And I agree about the "wooden" furniture nowadays. So much of it is that pressed-wood, like you said, a composite. But this is real! I noticed inside one of the drawers it says, Craig's Furniture, which I'd never heard of but my husband said is a good brand!

    1. Hi Julie! Thanks! I know...I was and still am SO excited! I NEVER find bargains like this. I'm always the one listening to a friend tell me about their great finds at garage sales, etc...and thinking, geez, why can't I have such luck?? Well, my day finally came! AND I think that desk should make my writing magical, don't you??

  11. With all this good luck, you might want to toss a dollar at a scratch-off lottery ticket! Congrats on prevailing in the ink cartridge rip-off, and on finding such a desk bargain.

    1. Hi Val ~ I laughed at your lottery suggestion, but hey...funnier things have happened...right?! I'll pick one up tomorrow and let you know if I'm a winner.....AND if I am....I'll split it with ya!

    1. Hi Pat! Thank you! And oh yes....I've lusted over those drawer pulls at Hobby Lobby many times....even though I had no reason to buy any! LOL...But, I did buy one a couple of weeks ago for a white table that the knob had broken. I'll have to post of photo of it sometime. And yes, I hope the "after" picture will be bee-u-ti-ful! :)

  14. Great find Becky...I love a good old used desk. Mine came from a garage sale in the 1970's. I still have it...my husband restored it and built a hutch with shelves for the top. I will always have it! Have a great week!

  16. You're going to paint it white?
    White white?
Or a lovely near cream antique white?
$40 is a fabulous price for a desk in such good condition.

    1. Hi River! Oh, I smiled at your comment!! And as I said to Mimsie and Terra, I'm happy to read other suggestions and thoughts about the desk! I chose white white because I already have a lovely old dresser in the same room that is white white....but antique white is nice, too! Maybe the knobs will have antique white in them... :)

    2. I love painting furniture... I did my bedroom stuff and a kitchen cabinet, but I'm unable to do much in the way of sanding these days, so I've had to stop.

  17. Oh man, what a find! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I have a tiny old desk (I think it's actually a kid's desk lol) but I loved it and brought it home and painted it white because I figured it was easier than stripping it. I never thought to change the knob, though. I should look into that.

  18. I like that desk! How resourceful of you to find and fix one up like that! A good writing desk is very important; I've had my desk for more than a decade and have always hated it, which is partly why I write in cafes instead. I always envied Carrie Bradshaw's desk on Sex and the City; if I had a desk like hers, I'd stay home to write.
