* NOSTALGIC SUNDAY *

It's Time For Another Nostalgic Sunday

Gosh, I almost forgot another Nostalgic Sunday! (That's why there wasn't one last Sunday...I forgot.)

With it being autumn, or so the calendar says, I love reminiscing about my Catholic School days. Strolling home from grade school, carrying an arm load of books, and purposely zigzagging through crunchy leaves, I'd go over the day's events in my mind...

(my uniform was similar to this, solid color, no plaid)

I enjoyed Sister Marie's English class, but as always, hated the torture of Arithmetic word problems.

The cafeteria's lunch was one of my favorites: a bowl of chili-mac, a peanut butter sandwich, celery sticks, and milk to drink.

That boy I've had a crush on for over two years actually said "Hi" to me today! Be still my heart! At least I think it was me...I looked around and nobody was behind me...

~~~
Although my family moved around quite a bit during my very early school years, I attended the same grade school from the middle of 4th grade through graduation at the end of 8th grade. I loved it there!
And I so love the fact that I grew up in an era where kids were safe walking to and from school, and/or riding their bikes to friends' houses, and not coming home until it was almost dark. I think growing up in the 50s and 60s was undoubtedly the BEST time to grow up...for which I am SO THANKFUL!
  1. Dark was when we were due home too. On foot, or on bicycle. Alone or with friends.
    We were indeed lucky.
  2. The 50s and 60s were the best time for kids, we roamed everywhere with minimum rules, home just before the sun was down, or in time for dinner whichever came first. And everyone knew everyone else's kids, so if you did wrong, your parents knew about it before you got home (*~*)
    1. HI River - Yes, That is SO true about the neighborhood families knowing each other. If any of us did something "bad" the neighbors might tell our parents, or go ahead and scold us themselves! :)
  3. Ohh what lovely memories! I've been reminiscing about my 70s childhood recently too. Such a free and innocent time. I used to kick around the leaves on the sidewalk on my way home from school in my grey uniform and mary-janes. I was more of a tomboy, though, so I couldn't wait to get home to change into jeans and a hoody and go find a tree to climb. *sigh*
    1. Oh Trish - I love your very similar memories! In fact, the photo I show for a school uniform...mine was actually grey, too. I couldn't find a photo of one online :)
  4. While in 1st through 4th grade, both my parents worked so after school my Brother and I had to walk to a daycare center until my Mom could pick us up several hours later.
    Thinking back on this it cracks me up. All of us kids in the Daycare Center hated the place (or so we said) and we'd spend a great deal of time imagining ways we could escape. (Often building a rocket out of big wooden blocks so we could fly out of it.)
    But what's so funny is that my Brother and I would voluntarily walk from school to the place. So we'd imprison ourselves first, and then complain and attempt escape. Gotta love that kind of kid-logic, eh?
    Today, no parent in their right mind would let their children make that same walk we made every Monday through Friday. It would just be begging for trouble. Times have changed, and not for the better.
    1. I'm so happy that you have fun school memories, too, Stephen T! I can't imagine what kids these days will have "fond memories" of.... Almost falling into a hole or pond because they're texting so much, or following Pokémon??
  5. I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and I think that was a pretty good time too. We had to come in "when the street lights came on."
  6. A corner television?! I had no idea there ever was such a thing!
    Love the Andy Griffith photo. :-) I can hear him now, "Ain't Bee..."
  7. I was in elementary school during the late fifties to early sixties. Not only did we walk to and from school, but we spent endless hours roaming our neighborhoods and nearby canyons (we lived in San Diego). My sister and I never encountered any problems nor did we ever hear of any. Things were just safe for the most part I guess.
    1. Hi Arlee - Ditto for my childhood, too! We were gone all day, sometimes, in the summer time. And just think...NO cell phones! Yikes! How did we ever live?? And NO bike helmets!
  10. I was just thinking about the Partridge Family the other day. They were a HUGE part of my early grammar school days.
    1. Hi Karen - Aww, that's cute! They weren't part of my "early" grammar school days, but I loved watching them in my "later" high school days! (I'm OLD!) LOL
