Benjamin Franklin a President - Who Knew?

Have you seen the recent Lowe's commercials on TV? They advertise their President's Day Sale, with animated currency floating down the screen....while a voice says something about saving lots of Benjamins and Washingtons.......hmmm.....I had to back it up the first time to make sure I heard it correctly. Yep. They think that Benjamin Franklin was a US President!! (old Ben is on the Hundred Dollar Bill) And why did they refer to him by his first name...and George Washington by his last?? And who wants to save a bunch of ONE DOLLAR BILLS anyway??!!

  1. Of course Ben was president! Didn't you know? And other lesser-known presidents are (according to some of my former students)are Booker T. Washington and Harriet Truman. (Now you didn't know we've already had a female president, did you?)

  3. That's funny! We mute commercials so I don't hear most of them. Well Happy President's Day Mr Franklin!

  4. ACTUALLY, Benjamin Franklin did indeed hold the title of President. Since it's President's Day, not President of the United States Day, he would be qualified to be in the advertisement.

Don't believe me? Benjamin Franklin held the office of President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. In today's terms it would make him a governor...but it still makes him a President.

  6. Well it wouldn't be a good day if I didn't get to tap my useless knowledge. Besides, as President of Saturday Writers it was your day too!

  8. OMG, I don't want my ignorance to cramp the conversation here, but you know what? If I had seen that commercial, I wouldn't have noticed, and I'm wondering now... maybe I've thought all along that Franklin was a president. If that's true, I am very embarrassed... Now I'll verify the word "fancie," proud in my knowledge that it is spelled incorrectly!
