* THE OSCARS - ALWAYS WORTH WATCHING! *

I always love watching The Academy Awards, even though for the past few/many years, I haven't seen any of the movies nominated! I'm just not a big movie-goer. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE movies. And I love being in a crowded theater where everyone in the audience experiences it with me. But the few movies I have seen in the past few years, there's only been a handful of other people there. I guess I need to save my money and attend the grown-up, later night shows, not the "cheaper" matinees. Anyway......I still love watching The Oscars. I've heard and read all the hype about who should win what category, etc. I've already seen The Golden Globes and other award shows, so I'm excited and ready to watch.

My favorite parts last night were those unexpected ones:

* John Travolta poking fun at himself for last year's major faux-pas in pronouncing Idina Menzel's name incorrectly.

* Pawel Pawlikowski talking through the music in his thank-you speech and receiving cheers from the audience.

* Lady Gaga's amazing "Sound of Music" tribute. (Who knew she could sing like that??) And then Julie Andrews coming onstage, almost in tears, hugging and congratulating her. Magical!  2/24 * I'm adding the best You tube link I could find of this. Enjoy!

There were others, but those are my top three. (Although I also loved the rendition of "Glory", and it was very powerful, it wasn't a huge surprise, so that's why it's not in my "favorite (unexpected) parts.")

How about you? Did any of you watch The Oscars? What were your favorite moments, if you had any? Did you see any of the nominated or winning films?

  1. I didn't watch the Oscars, just not that interested. I do wish Brad Pitt had been nominated for best actor for Fury and that Boyhood had won for best picture. Those are my two favorite recent movies.

    1. Hi Terra! Thanks for stopping and commenting. I'm sorry to say I've not even heard of Fury! I'll have to look for it.

  2. I almost always go to a matinee because I don't care for the crowds but I do love seeing the movies on the big screen. I may not like being a senior citizen but the ticket is a little less expensive! I enjoyed John Travolta too and Lady Gaga was amazing. My dad called me afterwards, he is 91, and said he didn't like her tattoo's. I told him if he only knew what she normally looks like when she performs he would agree with me that she looked great! What I dislike about the Oscar's is all the negative reviews after the show. I enjoyed it, I always do. I did see all the nominated Best Picture movies plus a few more. I agree with Terra, Fury should have been nominated. One of the best war movies I've ever seen in my opinion. Glad you watch, warms my heart.

  4. Jen and I don't have TV, just streaming. But I would love to have seen Julie Andrews. I've loved movies all my life, but some movies of the past few decades have far too much profanity for my taste though some of them are excellent otherwise. We can find so many through streaming that we never go to a movie theater. My daughter has dog ears, and the sound in theaters is so loud, her ears can't take it. So we wait for movies to come on Netflix or Hulu. Sometimes we pay for one on Amazon.

  5. I love the movies too, and this year I had actually seen a few of the award nominated movies. My favorite part of the show was Lady Gaga. What a talent!
    Take care Becky.

  6. Didn't watch it. In fact, I forgot it was on. I can't get into it when I haven't seen at least a couple of the movies.

  7. Gaga (and then Julie) blew me away. I had no idea she could sing like that. I loved JK's "Call Your Parents" speech and the one the Imitation Game writer gave. I was thrilled for all of Grand Budapest Hotel's awards -- my favorite movie of the year!

    1. Hi Jeanie! Yep, I agree about Gaga and Julie! And yes, JK's speech was great, as was Graham Moore's (Imitation Game). Grand Budapest Hotel looks really good. I'm sure I'll see it eventually! Thanks for commenting!

  8. Sound of Music is one of my all-time favorite movies. Although I didn't have time to watch the awards this year, I heard about Lady Gaga's rendition of the Sound of Music. Sure wish I had seen that! Thanks for sharing this with your readers.

  10. Nope. I just cannot do awards shows. There are too many, and it isn't like the old days. Bette Davis. Bogie. Bacall. Cagney. They were worthy.

  12. Well, I didn't see much of the Oscars because my husband likes to change the channels quite a bit! And since it wasn't on my "must see" list, I didn't go into the other room to watch. I also had not seen any of the movies. We wait until we can get them a bit cheaper at home. So I missed Lady Gaga and will listen to her on youtube. Did I ever thank you for the Christmas card? Two months ago? Well, if not, "Thank You"! It was a lovely surprise! ; )

    1. Hi Sandy! Your husband sounds like mine. He's constantly changing the channels and it drives me nuts!! They wouldn't do that if they still had to get up from their chair every time they wanted to do that! LOL. I don't remember if you thanked me or not....LOL, but you're very welcome! :)

  13. I only watched some of the Oscars- but I did catch Lady Gaga singing The Sound of Music and I loved it (I am a huge fan of the movie too). :) I haven't been to the movies in ages- but when I go I always try to go when there will be less of a crowd!

I agree- COME ON SPRING! :)

    1. Hi Jess ~ I'm so glad you saw (and heard!) Lady Gaga! It was one of those amazing live TV moments that gives a person chills and stays with them forever...at least for me! I think I'll blog about some of those other times....sometime soon! I am SO with you....COME ON SPRING!!

  14. I must admit I never watch the Oscars these days. I do not go to the movies and seldom watch movies on TV so am right out of touch with anything modern in that genre. I did read somewhere there were far less viewers this year than in previous years so maybe I am not the only one who no longer bothers to watch. Would you believe, although I've heard of Lady Gaga, I have never seen her or listened to her sing. These days I am just a regular old fuddy duddy. : )

    1. Hi Mimsie! You are funny ~ Sometimes I'm an old fuddy-duddy, too! I'm glad you've never seen Lady Gaga....Her "clothing" is usually so outrageous and ugly, it's unbelievable. Some of her singing is okay. She recently made a duet album with, of all people, Tony Bennett and it's called Cheek to Cheek. It has over 1,000 rave reviews on Amazon. She's really venturing away from her "normal" music. I hope you were able to see and hear the You Tube link I posted. Have a wonderful rest of the week!
