I found another great book at the library and this is the first book I've read by this author: Kristin Hannah
Winter Garden
Oh my gosh...I LOVED this book! It kept me engaged, I'd read at night until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, and wished I could fit in some reading time at my job. 😍
I'm really not very good at writing book reviews, so I won't even try! But I will say that this book and its characters stayed with me for days after I finished it, and that doesn't happen very often. I really cared about these people and couldn't get them out of my mind.
Here's a couple of sentences from page 158:
"Is something wrong?" Nina asked.
Meredith blinked slowly. "You mean besides the fact that my father died at Christmas, my mom is going crazy, my sister is pretending to help me, and my husband...is gone tonight?"
Nina knew it wasn't funny, but she couldn't help laughing.
"Sometimes when you open the door to your mother's past, you find your own future..."

Libraries are a slice of heaven aren't they? And that quote from the book flap is frighteningly true.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that a lot of people forget just how amazing a library is. It's taken for granted, like so many other wonderful things in life!
DeleteI loved the Nightingale. She's a wonderful writer!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jeanie! I just looked online at my local library and it looks like they only have that in an audio book. Shoot! Maybe they can get it for me. I glanced through many of her other books, but some seemed more "romance" type novels and I do not like them. But maybe I'm wrong?
DeleteSadly, it's been a long time since I was able to 'connect' with a character. (Even on some level, that's become necessary for me to fully enjoy.) I just read a little more out on Goodreads and have added this to my short list. Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteOh, Myra I completely understand! I'm like that, too. If I just can't get into a book, or care about any of the characters, how can I possibly keep reading?? I was in a funk like that for MONTHS and that is just not me! I'll be returning these books today and get some more...hopefully some really good "connecting" ones!
DeleteHi BECKY! I'm here! Gosh, if you can give such a good recommendation, I know it must be a good book. In fact, I am going to download it. I didn't know you were back blogging! So good to see, as many of us have dropped by the wayside. Can you put a link on your Facebook page, so that I know when you've got a new Pist up? Sending all best wishes to you.
ReplyDeleteHello dear Diane! Thanks for stopping by, and yes I'm including links on my FB author page: https://www.facebook.com/BeckyPovichTheWriter/
DeleteI haven't posted the newest one I just did today, but I will soon. And yes,I think you would really like Winter Garden and the other one I just read: The Nightingale. Bring your box of hankies with you!
Sounds so interesting! Currently I am reading one of Romain Gary's books and I am also amazed☺
ReplyDeleteThanks, Natalia! I've never heard of Romain Gary. I'll have to look him up! (I just looked at your blog...do you have a translation button?!)
