* Nostalgic Sundays *

I'm a nostalgic gal. I love old TV shows like The Andy Griffith Show (only the B&W episodes, ya know!) I'm particularly drawn to the lovely citizens of Mayberry because this fictional town reminds me so much of the real-life hometown of my parents and grandparents: Greenfield, Iowa.

When I was a little girl we went to Greenfield every summer for vacation. It was a magical time. The late 1950s, life was slow and easy, we young kids could walk or ride bikes all over town. I have such fabulous memories of those days, some of which will be included in my memoir.

Today I thought of trying to begin another weekly post and call it Nostalgic Sundays. I'm not really sure what I'll post or if I can even come up with something every Sunday, but I'm going to try. And if any readers decide to post something nostalgic on their blogs on Sundays, let me know and I'll be sure to stop by!

That's it for this Sunday, and surprisingly I've already thought of topics for at least two more Sundays.

"There is a lovely warmness about feelings of nostalgia as though in one's head one is putting on a pair of comfy old slippers and curling up in front of a fire."  - William E. Geist

  1. Your post immediately made me remember catching crayfish in the creek... I love watching old Andy Griffith episodes. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had an Aunt Bee we could call upon when needed?

  2. Oh, I'm glad my post brought you a fond memory!...and I must break into song...."You get a line, I'll get a pole, honey..honey. You get a line, I'll get a pole, babe..babe!"

  3. Hi Becky...I have lots of memories of Sundays from childhood. We did a lot of visiting grandparents. Also, there was a big merry-go-round on a hill overlooking a gorgeous lake. My father used to take us there, too, and wow, it was sooooo exciting. Thanks for all your visits and comments to my blog, Becky. You are a good Blogger friend! Susan

  4. It's funny how the 50's were a happy time for some. For others, it was a rough decade.

My brother was friends with the Dillards' musical group and their family (they played "The Darlings" on Mayberry) and they claimed Aunt Bee was always full of "liquid refreshment." No wonder she was always so cheery!

  5. Sunday is a good day to feel nostalgic, not sure what it is, mught be the slowliness the day usually brings, the disconnecting state of mind from routine - you left me thinking!! Have a good week!

  6. I like the old shows too, usually better than most of the new ones. I like the quote with this post--it describes nostalgia well.

  9. Hi Becky ... we were lucky to grow up in safer times, weren't we? I look forward to reading more of your Nostalgic Sunday posts.

Thanks so much for stopping by to visit, and I hope that your week is great!

  10. Especially since you write memoir, it's fitting to have Nostalgic Sundays.

  12. That is a great quote...and such a great idea for a weekly blog post. In fact, I bet if you started hosting a weekly meme, you would have many participants. I know I would link up. I'm all about nostalgia, and I believe others are too.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Love,
    Patti

  14. Hi, Becky! Mayberry is where I always wanted to live, and Andy Taylor is who I wanted to marry, so I enjoyed this post!

  15. Spending summers at my grandparents was a lot like being in Hooterville, but without the train.

Remember Howard the barber? Loved the episode where his place had love beads hanging (might have been one of those episodes in color)...he was quite the swingin' bachelor!

  16. My husband loves the Andy Griffith Show. However, he reminds me more of Oliver Wendell Douglas. Thank goodness there's no Arnold Ziffel running loose, or he would be sausage by now. And the do-it-yourself projects make me wish for Alf and Ralph.

  17. Oh, I love that you are a midwest gal. I'm from Nebraska. Such a wonderful post, made me wax nostalgic about trips to grandparents. Seems we've gotten into a big hurry these days, and I will love to read about times when we took the time to look around. Look forward to the posts!

  18. I'm a fan of nostalgia myself. I think it's very beneficial for writers as well!

  19. My brother has every epsiode of Andy Griffith on tape. Those were simpler times, for sure.

  20. My favorite show of all time! But do not forget there were major problems on Mayberry. How to get tonedeaf Barney out of the choir? Bea and Clara's rivalry over the new bachelor minister. And the Good Time Girls vs Helen and Thelma Lou! Complicated times ...

  21. Oh I love all things nostalgic. It takes me back to a much less complicated time.
