I love the 1974 musical "Mame" with Lucille Ball and Robert Preston. And yes, I know...Lucy is NOT a singer, but she's actually much better than she portrayed in the old "I Love Lucy" show. And yes, I know the movie was NOT a commercial success. What can I say? To each his/her own!
Why do I like this movie so much? Because of the character Mame. She's fun and wacky and loves life. She even tries to stay upbeat during the Great Depression and after getting fired from her job. That's when she comes home and sings "We need a little Christmas" with her young nephew Patrick and her loyal house attendant, Ito. Of course, there are many more great scenes, but since it's December.....How about a Little Christmas from my House to Yours?
These adorable porcelain dolls are part of a Christmas tree.
They're both singers in a Christmas choir, holding their song books.
I got my camera as close as possible and took a picture of the inside of one of the song books, because there are actual words and music in it! The song is: It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
Here is the tree. It's about 36" high and is standing on an end table in the living room. I bought it a couple of years ago at a local craft fair. The price was so incredibly low, I had to buy it instantly!
See where the choir girls are, and there are three snowmen in front of them. There are all kinds of other ornaments included, plus the lights, obviously. Everything is glued and stays in place, too. I just love it and can't imagine why it was so inexpensive! Maybe it was purchased at a garage sale for a cheapie price and then resold at the craft fair!
None of these photos turned out very well. I think it's partly because my camera battery needed a charge.
Here's one of the cute little ornaments.
We have one other tree that stands in the family room and it, too, is a cheapie! The Ronald and I bought it about 5 years ago at a Walgreens. It was a floor display, about 6 ft tall and narrow. Nothing fancy, but came with mulit-colored twinkle lights.....all for $15.00. Ya can't beat that!! I'll post photos of it some other time.
P.S. I know I owe so many e-mails, and blog visits and comments, and I stress over it every day. I promise that tomorrow - Wednesday the 12th - I will begin my attempt to catch up!
** Update: 10:00pm CST** Thanks to the incredibly insightful podso, I won't be adding anymore stress to my life during the holidays concerning e-mails or blog comments. I hope everyone will understand, as podso predicted, and will do the best I can!
And I leave you today with a favorite quote from "Mame"
"Life is a banquet! And most poor fools are starving to death!" -- Mame
You gotta love a bargain like that. I especially like the snowman.
ReplyDeleteYep, we all need a little Christmas!!!Thanks for the perky share! Hubby been down for five days with flu/cold thingy. I hope I am spared!!!!
ReplyDeleteAh, the Christmas spirit is just bursting out all over!

P.S. I love the Mame version with Rosalind Russell. A classic!

Critter Alley
Very cute tree. What a find! I like the little porcelain dolls.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a Christmasy tree. I have not quite forgiven Hick for making me give up my annual Scotch Pine for an artificial. It's not like it cost us anything. My relatives own a tree farm.
ReplyDeleteI love bargains!
ReplyDeleteHi Delores! Thanks. I love snowmen of all kinds. I decorate a lot with them at Christmas time because they can stay around all winter! I have hand towels, liquid soap dispensers, statues, plaques, etc....of snowmen!
ReplyDeleteHey Claudia! I'm glad my post was perky for you! :) But so sorry to hear about your husband being sick for so long. Hope he's better really soon!
Hi Pat! Yes it is! I can't believe Christmas is 2 weeks from today! Oh, and I like the Rosalind Russell version, too!
Hey Daisy! I know...what a find. I was so excited when I saw it, and then the price was the frosting on top! :)
Hi Val! We always had a real tree until the last couple of years. Once all the kids are grown and gone, it's just not as fun anymore...
Hi Beth! Yes, a beautiful bargain!
Lovely, Becky. It's looking very festive at your house. Love the dolls. Susan
ReplyDeleteWonderful post! But the last thing you need is blog stress. We'll all be here when you have the time. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! Thank you. I know you love dolls and have quite a collection!
ReplyDeleteHi Podso! And thank you so much! How silly of me to even think of adding any stress to my life during the holidays! Geez...thanks for pointing that out! :)
Cute! $15 for a six footer, wow! Stop by my blog for a big laugh.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda! Thanks...and I just read your blog. Funny and cute, both!
ReplyDeleteYou really did get a bargain. Joe and I thought to replace our tree this year and opted against it. Maybe we'll hit the day-after sales. :)
ReplyDeleteYou shame me. There is zip in the way of Christmas decoration up in our house yet. I haven't finished shopping, and I have barely started wrapping. Aaaargh.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, Becky, and such a great deal too. We are going to try and get ours up today ... I hope.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that movie, but I'll keep my eyes open for it now.
Hugs,
Kathy M.
The tree is beautiful. You're a great bargain shopper. Hope Christmas isn't too stressful for you. I'm stressing a bit though. Hubby had the flu since Thanksgiving and things have slowed down. He's better now but we have lots of catching up to do. Have a great day Becky.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute tree, and I can't believe you got it for that price!
ReplyDelete=)
Hi Becky. I'm afraid that I've never seen that film, so perhaps I should look out for it! Your little dolls are absolutely adorable. I love them and your tree. My house is all looking very Christmassy as well at the moment. I love it! Take care.
ReplyDeletePretty Christmas decorations, but your post really makes me want to watch Mame. I was in the stage play Auntie Mame when I was a sophomore in high school. I played Mrs. Upson, which is Gloria's (Patrick's fiance) mother. Anyway, let's all be LOW STRESS this Christmas. :)
ReplyDeleteI love Christmas decorations, but I'm so funny, as soon as Christmas is over, I want them down, gone, put away for another year. I bet your house is lovely!
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa! Yes, maybe the "day after" sales will be good, and sometimes they're even really good BEFORE Christmas, too!
ReplyDeleteHey EC! Hey, I didn't say I was finished with Christmas stuff! I haven't done anything else...except mail a few cards. I have more to send! Oh, and I would have a hard time feeling Christmasy in a hot climate like you have!
Hi Kathy! You'll probably never see that movie, unless you buy it! I'm sure you can find used copies online!
Hi Myrna! Gosh, I'm sorry your husband has been sick, too! I've heard of others having long illnesses, too. Not fun AT ALL, especially this time of year. I'll try not to stress if you don't, too!
Hi Sue! Thanks!
Hey Diane! As I told Kathy, above, you'll probably find it online at a reasonable price! Thanks!
Oh Margo! That is hilarious that you played the uptight Mrs. Upson! If you like musicals, you'd like this version!
Hi Julie! Thanks so much for stopping by and becoming a follower! I really appreciate it! I worked with a gal years ago that always took her tree and decorations down on Dec. 26th! I like to leave mine up through the first week of January.
I think most bloggers understand about busy schedules. I hope so! No more worries...that's an order :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for that little bit of Christmas :) I've never seen Mame but now I think I want to put a search out for a copy.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol! Thanks for stopping and commenting!
ReplyDeleteHey Trish! If you "Love Lucy" and musical/comedies, I say you would love this movie! Thanks for stopping and commenting!
I loved "Mame," too. Really, anything Lucille Ball starred in is a hit with me. I may have to rent that and watch again soon.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteOh, Juliann...I'm so happy to know you've seen "Mame" and loved it, too! I think I'll look for a used DVD to buy online, then I can watch it whenever I want, and fast forward and/or rewind to my favorite parts!
ReplyDeleteHi The Desert Rocks! Thanks so much for stopping and commenting....AND for becoming my new follower! Welcome!
What a find! Those little Christmas choir dolls are precious and how wonderful that they are so detailed! Are you saying that the ornaments are glued on the tree? I have a few trees that get put up after Christmas, with ornaments on them, but never thought of gluing the ornaments to the tree. Great idea! laurie
ReplyDeleteVery cute Christmas tree! I'm sure it brings a smile to your face every day!
ReplyDeleteAnd, yeah, I agree... don't stress over the little stuff. Relax and enjoy the season! ;)
When I was a kid I loved listening to my Mom's Mame record, mostly because of this song! Your tree is gorgeous and I love the ornaments. Thanks for a bit of Christmas on a dreary and rainy day here in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurie! Thank you for stopping by! And yes, all the ornaments and dolls, etc. are glued to the tree itself. Voila'! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy! Thanks! And yes....stress free holidays...and beyond! :)
Hi Julie! Thank you and OMG!! I LOVE it that your mom had the Mame Soundtrack...and that you liked listening to it!! Awesome!! :)
