* AN INTERESTING FIND AT THE LIBRARY *

What made me pick up this book at the library?

There were a couple of reasons, but mostly because on this cute book cover is the exact same recipe box that my mother had! Just seeing it brings back so many happy memories of my early childhood...yummy aromas from the kitchen, my mother letting me "help" with cookies and cakes.

I also saw a photo of this box in a recent woman's magazine. I don't remember the name of it, but I wrote to them about it and was just sure they would print my Letter to the Editor....Hmmffp! LOL

I hadn't heard of this author before, but I like her writing (it's another light and easy read, similar to what I just finished "Good Riddance") and I will definitely want to read her other books.

What about you? Do you pick up a book because of the cover? And how many times have you just skimmed a couple and pages and thought either

a) Wow, I think I'll like this!

       ~~~ or ~~~
b) Ick, what an awful book!
I can usually tell by just the first few pages whether I would like a book or not. And I definitely don't read books I don't like!
Our heat-wave has finally taken a break for at least a little while. High temps in the 80's this week and lows in the 60's! Turn off that a/c and save some $$$.
That's it for now, folks! See you soon.
  1. When I'm book shopping, I consider a book in this order:
    1. Cover is appealing
    2. Back blurb is intriguing
    3. First few pages make me want to know more.
    If it passes all three tests: Winner, winner!
  2. Despite the old saying we ALL judge a book by its cover - at least to some extent. Some entice us to pick the book up, and others act as a 'do not go here' sign.
    I tend to read the last few pages to see whether I will like a book, and shamefully always read the end before I finish a book. Any book. Fiction or non-fiction.
    1. I've seen some covers that are so awful I certainly don't even pick them up. And however you want to read books is okay with me! :)
    1. OH that's great! I forgot to say in my post that my sister-in-law currently has the box with mother's recipes inside. It's on display in her kitchen with other tin containers. I'm so happy it didn't get thrown out or lost when we cleaned out mother's apartment.
  4. Well, thumbs DOWN to those arrogant magazine folk. (Obviously, someone never read Emily Post.) I have my mother's old recipe box sitting atop our refrigerator ... but it's no-where's as cute as this one.
    That's sure an interesting question about book covers! Way back, before Kindle when I'd visit Barnes & Noble and the like … yes, I'd be drawn to certain fonts and artwork. But I never considered 'why.' I suppose the marketing geniuses at the big publishing houses have already discovered that. I'm struggling to finish something right now. It's not really awful, but neither does it hold my attention. Life's too short!
    1. Aww, thanks Myra for your comment about the magazine people! Yeah, they missed out on a neat story. I'm glad you have your mother's recipe box, too. I agree on Life's too Short! That's why I don't read stuff I don't like :)
  5. A cover will make me pick it up to read the blurb. Sometimes the title catches my eye. I always look at the first few pages, then somewhere in the middle. If I don't like how it reads, I put it back.
  7. BECKY-O! ~
    I may have picked up a book based on its cover before, but a specific incident is not coming to my mind at the moment. However, I most definitely picked up a book because of its title once:
    I was sitting in the private library of the retirement community where I worked and I saw a book titled 'BEAUTIFUL OUTLAW' by someone named John Eldredge sitting on a shelf in the Religion section. With a title like that, I figured it had probably been misfiled, so I pulled it out and saw, to my surprise, that indeed it DID belong in that section. I opened it randomly to some page toward the middle, read that one page, put the book back, and before the week was out, I had my own copy of it.
    Since then, I have given a copy of that book to a number of friends and family members. One of my top ten books of all time! And just think, I never would have discovered it had it not been for that title. Who would expect a book titled 'BEAUTIFUL OUTLAW' to be about Jesus Christ?!
  8. I love to find something where you "see" a direct link to the past. This book looks pretty cute, actually -- even without the recipe box! And yes, I've bought (or picked up) a book by its cover many a time~!
    1. Hi Jeanie! Yes, kind of a serendipity, isn't it?
