* SAYING GOODBYE TO VERN *
It is with great sorrow that I write about losing our beloved dog, Vern today. He'd been having some major health problems off and on, and we had to say our goodbyes to him this morning. I can't write anything else right now, or post more photos, but please just type in Vern in the upper left search area. See the Blogger symbol and the looking glass? Type Vern and you will see many blog posts and photos.

* DUMB THINGS BECKY SAID *
One for the chapter of "Dumb Things Becky Said."
Hey, this might be a semi-regular blog post, like my Nostalgic Sundays.
(I think I have dyslexia of the mouth!)
At work today, a woman came into the store and asked how to get to our tearoom. I said, "I'll take you there. It's right this way."
Then...knowing there was a group of ladies already sitting at one of the long tables, I asked her, "Are you here with the group of large ladies?"
I swear to God I said that! I couldn't make this stuff up. I kind of back pedaled, explaining what I meant to say, etc. etc.
One of my dreams is to do Stand-Up someday at an Open Mic. I'd bring LOTS of friends who already laugh at stuff I say, so I wouldn't die of embarrassment, in case nobody else laughed.
I don't remember if I've jotted down any of the crazy, backwards things I've said over the past few years, but I'll look. And if I didn't write them down, hopefully some will pop into my head....hopefully!

* A NOSTALGIC SUNDAY... REPEAT *
It's Time for Another Nostalgic Sunday
Hello Everyone ~
This is a complete repost of a Nostalgic Sunday from August 7, 2011. It's so warm and sunny and beautiful outside, and I'm drinking iced tea with my little sweater on it....so I just had to find this and repost it...plus an additional note at the end!
~~~
I think I've mentioned more than once that I love iced tea in the summertime.
No matter what cold drink you sip or guzzle in hot weather, the drinking glass (whether it's really glass or plastic, etc.) tends to get tiny droplets of moisture on the outside.
When I was a little girl, in the 1950s, no kitchen was without very important, priceless items, made just for that little inconvenience.......
Little Terrycloth "Sweaters"!
P.S. After posting this, I searched online for somewhere to buy these cute little terry cloth covers, and I hit the pay dirt when I wound up on The Vermont Country Store, because they not only have the adorable covers, but also the fabulous, colorful aluminum tumblers of my childhood! These are the drinking glasses we had and used the "sweaters" on!! ☺
(Both photos courtesy The Vermont Country Store)
* Note: In my original post, I forgot to mention that the "sweaters" we had when I was a young girl didn't fit just around the glass, but they also had bottoms to them, so it also acted as coasters! I haven't found any of those, but I also haven't searched since this post! ....and I know it isn't summer yet, but I love the quote below and it so fits today. *
"Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world." -- Ada Louise Huxtable
* NOSTALGIC SUNDAY *
It's Time for Another Nostalgic Sunday
From the time I wrote my post about Merle Haggard on Thursday afternoon, and today during the early afternoon, I had two of those Twilight Zoney happenings... otherwise known as those incidents of Cosmic Encouragement (thanks again to Connie's comment in an April 2010 blog post of mine!)
For now, I'm not going to share what happened, but please don't think it was something so magnificent or weird or bad. I just don't have the time and the mental strength to write about it properly. (I've been de-cluttering my home office this evening like the Tasmanian Devil!)
What does any of this have to do with Nostalgic Sunday?
Memories and Writing...and Following My Bliss
I'll be back soon, but for now I want to urge all of you to follow your bliss. The first time I heard the poem below, it was from a new writer friend and mentor...and it was a life-changing moment,
"If you do follow your bliss,
you put yourself on a kind of track
that has been there all the while waiting for you,
and the life you ought to be living
is the one you are living.
When you can see that,
you begin to meet people
who are in the field of your bliss,
and they open the doors to you.
you put yourself on a kind of track
that has been there all the while waiting for you,
and the life you ought to be living
is the one you are living.
When you can see that,
you begin to meet people
who are in the field of your bliss,
and they open the doors to you.
I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid,
and doors will open
where you didn't know they were going to be.
If you follow your bliss,
doors will open for you that wouldn't have opened for anyone else.”
and doors will open
where you didn't know they were going to be.
If you follow your bliss,
doors will open for you that wouldn't have opened for anyone else.”
* ANOTHER LEGEND LEAVES US *
I was shocked and saddened to hear about
the recent death of Merle Haggard. He was younger than I'd thought, too. I
guess because of his hard life...and hard livin'....it took its toll on him.
What a handsome man he was...way back when....
As a teenager, I DID NOT like country
music. I was into The Beatles, MoTown, Rolling Stones, etc.
But as a young 20-Something wife of an Army
Specialist in Germany during the early 1970s, I learned to not only tolerate
country music, but to really love many of the songs and performers. We had no
TV or telephone, but did have a nice stereo system with a radio, turntable, and
great speakers. I listened to the Armed Forces Network (AFN) all day long, and
the programs varied because of the diverse community of the US Army. Pretty
smart, huh? SO, when country music came on, I began to like it and sing along.
Plus, when bands played at our local Service Club (a small version of a USO)
they, too, played an assortment of music genre.
One of the songs performed countless times,
"Silver Wings" was a big hit of Merle Haggard's. It held special
meaning to all of us wives and servicemen since we were so far from home...and
to those who maybe had to leave their spouses back in the States.
from You Tube
When a "celebrity" dies, I'm less
saddened because of what we still have them: movies, records, TV appearances,
etc. I'll be playing my Merle Haggard CDs and loving that voice of his again
and again.
What a handsome man he was...way back when....
* A CHICKEN SOUP SURPRISE *
Good morning, everyone! While browsing around Amazon just now, I came across something that really caught my eye and gave me a thrill.
Are you familiar with Amazon's Author Page? If you like a certain author and you're checking out his/her books and book reviews, etc. on Amazon, and if they've set up their own info page, you can click on their link and read more about them. Here is mine: http://www.amazon.com/Becky-Lewellen-Povich/e/B00GMWOOES/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0
No, reading my page did not give me a thrill...but what did is this...Author Amy Newmark, of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame and fortune...her author page includes the following information: http://www.amazon.com/Amy-Newmark/e/B005EN4K4K/ref=ntt_aut_sim_2_1
It is cloudy, dreary, and rainy outside...but inside...I'm dancing on air and basking in just plain old happiness!
* VERN IS ON THE MEND...*
Our dear Vern has been sick and after a trip to our fabulous vet (Dr. Kelly Brister in St. Peters, Mo) we found out he has pancreatitis. He was pretty sick for a couple of days but with a proper diet and medications, he is on the mend. He's not "himself" yet and may never be the same dog again. He hasn't been allowed to have any Milk Bone treats, rawhide bones or chews, or the occasional cracker or Cheezit...and it's probable he may never have them again. Ron and I are shocked he hasn't really pestered us for those things, either. We just tell him "Dr. Brister said you can't have any."...and also the occasional white lie of "No more bones. All gone!" And he'll go lie down somewhere.
And all I have to say about that is......Huh??
He's still the sweetest dog in the whole world!
~ ~ ~
For those of you who don't know the story about Vern, here's a condensed version I posted on my blog on August 29, 2011....his 10th Birthday!
Three months after we had to say goodbye to our beloved Tiger, (Dec 2010) I was ready to look for another dog. Wanted an "older" dog....a companion, and not a frisky puppy. Found Vern, a lab mix, online at a shelter. His age was listed as eight, but found out he was really nine and a half.....big difference in dog years! But, we brought him home with us in March 2011 and have been in love with this fabulous dog ever since! He is sweet, loving, smart, funny and just plain perfect. Happy Birthday, Vern! May you live MANY more years.
So, obviously, this means we'll celebrate
Vern's 15th Birthday this August!
This was taken at the home we lived in then..2011
Awww.......
My laptop has been giving me trouble the past few weeks whenever I try to post photos on my blog. Earlier today, it "allowed" me to post these two...and now it won't let me do any. I keep getting this message:
Some
library features are unavailable due to unsupported library locations.
Bye for now! I hope everyone is having a fabulous Saturday!
P.S. There's a huge grammatical error below.
That kind of thing drives me crazy!...
But y'all already knew it was a short trip, right??!!
